Current Trends in Nursing II

1.4K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

National Nursing Organizations II

1.6K
Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...

Nursing Assessment

8.2K
The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments...

Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

2.5K
Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions:

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Patient Outcomes
  • Quality Improvement

Background:

  • National recommendations for over a decade have advocated for higher nurse education to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Organizational strategies were employed to increase the proportion of educated nurses over 14 years at a specific site.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the relationship between the proportion of nurses with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher education and pediatric patient outcomes.
  • To explore correlations between nursing educational preparation and nurse-sensitive indicators (NSIs).

Main Methods:

  • A quality improvement project utilized retrospective data from hospital databases spanning up to 14 years.
  • Examined the association between the percentage of BSN-prepared nurses and nine different NSIs.

Main Results:

  • Significant negative correlations were observed between the proportion of BSN-prepared nurses and central line-associated bloodstream infections (r = -0.55) and surgical site infections (r = -0.71).
  • Four out of nine NSIs demonstrated moderate correlation with the proportion of highly educated nurses.

Conclusions:

  • Increasing the percentage of nurses with BSN or higher education was associated with improved outcomes in specific NSI categories.
  • Findings support the link between advanced nursing education and enhanced patient safety metrics.
