This study introduces a novel mesoporous titanium dioxide/boron-doped diamond (TiO2/BDD) hybrid electrode for advanced oxidation processes. The hybrid electrode demonstrates a synergistic effect, enhancing the removal of recalcitrant organic matter through combined electrochemical and photocatalytic treatments.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
Background:
- Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes enable ozone generation via electrolysis, a powerful oxidant.
- Ozone's oxidative potential (2.07 V vs. NHE) is insufficient for complete degradation of some persistent organic pollutants.
- Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilize hydroxyl radicals (2.85 V vs. NHE) for more potent pollutant decomposition.
Purpose of the Study:
- To fabricate a novel mesoporous titanium dioxide/boron-doped diamond (TiO2/BDD) hybrid electrode.
- To investigate the potential of this hybrid electrode for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
- To evaluate the synergistic effects between electrochemical and photocatalytic water treatment methods.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of a mesoporous TiO2/BDD hybrid electrode.
- Electrochemical water treatment using the hybrid electrode.
- Photocatalytic water treatment utilizing UV light and the hybrid electrode.
- Assessment of pollutant degradation efficiency and identification of synergistic effects.
Main Results:
- The mesoporous TiO2/BDD hybrid electrode was successfully fabricated.
- A significant synergistic effect was observed between electrochemical and photocatalytic treatments using the hybrid electrode.
- This combined approach demonstrated enhanced degradation of recalcitrant organic matter compared to BDD electrodes alone.
Conclusions:
- The developed TiO2/BDD hybrid electrode is effective for AOPs.
- Synergistic integration of electrochemical and photocatalytic processes enhances water treatment efficacy.
- This hybrid electrode offers a promising solution for degrading persistent organic pollutants in wastewater.
