A pilot frailty education program in Japanese barbershops showed potential for reaching older adults. However, the web-based tool was difficult for those over 65, indicating a need for simpler interventions to combat frailty.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Community Interventions
Background:
- Frailty significantly impacts the physical and psychological well-being of older adults.
- Despite its negative effects, frailty is potentially reversible.
- Innovative community settings are needed to deliver effective frailty interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a pilot frailty education program delivered via barbershops and salons in Japan.
- To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using barbers/stylists to educate customers about frailty.
- To determine if a web-based tool could support frailty assessment in this setting.
Main Methods:
- Five barbershops/salons in Japan participated in the pilot program.
- Customers received education on frailty classification (normal, prefrail, frail).
- A web-based assessment tool was developed for barbers/stylists; 45 customers (82% women, median age 53) participated.
Main Results:
- Initial frailty scores: 35% normal, 58% prefrail, 7% frail.
- No significant changes in frailty status scores were observed post-intervention.
- Customers over 65 found the web-based assessment tool difficult to use.
Conclusions:
- Barbershops/salons can serve as venues for frailty education and initial assessment.
- Females and highly educated individuals showed greater interest in the program.
- Simplifying the intervention is crucial for nationwide expansion and broader reach.
