Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food.
iChip01:24

iChip

The cultivation of environmental microorganisms has long been hindered by the inability to replicate complex native conditions in vitro. The isolation chip (iChip) addresses this limitation by facilitating the growth of previously uncultivable microorganisms through in situ incubation. Designed for high-throughput microbial cultivation, the iChip comprises hundreds of microchambers, each capable of housing a single microbial cell. These microchambers are loaded with a mixture of molten agar and...

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Research
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education

Background:

  • Contemporary science requires translating discoveries into health innovations.
  • Biomedical trainees often lack essential innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) skills.
  • There is a need for structured training to bridge this gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Entrepreneurship for Biomedicine (E4B) program.
  • To assess the impact of I&E skills training on biomedical researchers.
  • To determine trainee satisfaction and program outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • The E4B program offers two online courses covering core and advanced I&E skills.
  • Curriculum includes didactic content, a team-based capstone project, and mentorship.
  • Program culminates in a virtual pitch presentation.
  • Delivered online, requiring approximately 4 hours weekly.

Main Results:

  • In 2020, 77 trainees completed E4B1 and 13 completed E4B2.
  • Trainees reported high satisfaction with content and mentorship.
  • Pre- and post-program analyses showed increased trainee confidence in I&E abilities.
  • Four graduates secured external funding, and three started companies.

Conclusions:

  • The E4B program demonstrates strong acceptance and preliminary effectiveness.
  • The program has the potential to enhance medical school curricula and technology transfer.
  • Future plans include a more robust evaluation and expanded recruitment.
