Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Gesture production and comprehension are crucial for language development.
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often show differences in gesture production compared to typically developing (TD) children.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if gesture production and comprehension follow similar developmental patterns in young TD children.
To determine if this pattern holds for verbal children with ASD who have language abilities comparable to TD children.

Main Methods:

Study 1: Assessed gesture production and comprehension in TD children aged 2-4 years.
Study 2: Evaluated gesture production and comprehension in verbal children with ASD (mean age 5 years) with matched language abilities.
Gesture production was elicited via parent-child play; comprehension was tested in a structured experiment.

Main Results:

Evidence suggests that gesture production and comprehension follow similar trajectories across different ages in TD children.
This alignment between gesture production and comprehension was also observed in verbal children with ASD.
Findings indicate that gesture production and comprehension function as an integrated communication system.

Gesture production and comprehension appear to be closely linked and develop in parallel.
