Background:

Limited quantitative data exists on nursing PhD student research topics.
Understanding research topic differences between in-person and online/hybrid programs is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the prevalence of research topics and methods in nursing PhD dissertations.
To determine if research topics and methods differ between online/hybrid and in-person PhD programs.
To demonstrate text-mining for analyzing large document corpora.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 2,027 publicly available PhD dissertation abstracts (2015-2019).
Application of structural topic modeling (STM) for text mining.
Comparison of research topics and methods across program delivery formats.

Main Results:

Identified 24 distinct research topics within nursing PhD dissertations.
Most topics showed similar prevalence in online/hybrid and in-person programs.
Online/hybrid programs showed higher prevalence in nursing education, professional development, work environment, simulation, and qualitative analysis.
In-person programs showed higher prevalence in pediatrics, sleep science, gerontology, and chronic disease management.

Conclusions:

Nursing PhD programs offer a broad spectrum of research opportunities.
Some differences in research topic prevalence exist between online/hybrid and in-person programs.
Further research is needed to understand the drivers of these topic variations.
