Web-based chlamydia education for university students: A pilot project.

Summary

University students showed improved chlamydia knowledge after completing a nurse-developed online education program. This intervention effectively increased awareness of the sexually transmitted infection in a key demographic.

Background:

Chlamydia disproportionately impacts young adults aged 15-24.
Limited knowledge about chlamydia may reduce testing rates in high-risk groups.
Effective educational interventions for this demographic are not widely documented.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effectiveness of a nurse-developed, web-based educational intervention in enhancing chlamydia knowledge among university students.
To address the gap in documented interventions for improving chlamydia awareness in young adults.

Main Methods:

A pilot project employed a pre- and post-test design.
The study involved 47 undergraduate students at a U.S. university.
Web-based education content was informed by focus groups and scientific evidence.

Main Results:

A statistically significant increase in chlamydia knowledge was observed post-intervention (p < .0001).
Mean knowledge scores improved from baseline (M=6.5) to post-intervention (M=8.0).

Conclusions:

Web-based, nurse-developed education shows promise for increasing chlamydia knowledge in university students.
This intervention may be a valuable tool for improving sexual health literacy in young adults.
