Summary

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and sufficient vitamin D levels show higher HOXA10 mRNA expression in the endometrium. This suggests a link between vitamin D status and endometrial receptivity in PCOS patients.

Background:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and endometrial HOXA10 mRNA expression in women with PCOS.
  • To determine if vitamin D status influences HOXA10 mRNA levels in the endometrium of PCOS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty women with PCOS undergoing endometrial injury before their second IVF/ICSI attempt were included.
  • Serum vitamin D levels were measured and categorized into deficiency (<20 ng/mL), insufficiency (20-30 ng/mL), and replete (>30 ng/mL) groups.
  • Endometrial HOXA10 mRNA expression was analyzed using RT-PCR and correlated with serum vitamin D levels.

Main Results:

  • HOXA10 mRNA expression was significantly higher in vitamin D replete women compared to deficient and insufficient groups.
  • Vitamin D replete women showed 3.3-fold higher HOXA10 mRNA expression than deficient and 2.6-fold higher than insufficient groups.
  • A significant positive correlation was found between serum vitamin D levels and HOXA10 mRNA expression in the replete group (r=0.655, p=0.02).

Conclusions:

  • Sufficient serum vitamin D levels are associated with significantly higher endometrial HOXA10 mRNA expression in women with PCOS.
  • This finding highlights the potential role of vitamin D in supporting endometrial receptivity in PCOS.
  • Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may be beneficial for improving reproductive outcomes in women with PCOS.
