DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, or CMRI, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that employs a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create precise images of the heart and arteries. It provides comprehensive information about cardiac anatomy, function, perfusion, and tissue characterization without ionizing radiation.IndicationsCMRI diagnoses various heart conditions, including tissue damage from heart attacks, ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, aortic issues (tears, aneurysms,...

Summary

Ocular siderosis in a patient with iron toxicity showed abnormal color vision and increased vascular flow density. Multimodal imaging and electroretinography effectively characterized these retinal changes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Ocular siderosis results from intraocular foreign bodies containing iron.
  • Iron toxicity can lead to significant ocular changes and vision impairment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize ocular alterations in a case of ocular siderosis with iron toxicity.
  • To evaluate the utility of multimodal imaging and electroretinography in assessing ocular siderosis.

Main Methods:

  • A case study of a 34-year-old female with ocular siderosis in the left eye after penetrating injury.
  • Utilized cone contrast threshold (CCT), full-field electroretinogram, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), and OCT angiography (OCTA).
  • Evaluated ocular changes preoperatively and postoperatively after foreign body removal and cataract surgery.

Main Results:

  • Preoperative CCT revealed abnormal color vision.
  • OCT angiography (OCTA) demonstrated increased vascular flow density related to the iron foreign body.
  • Successful surgical intervention led to no postoperative complications.

Conclusions:

  • Cone contrast threshold (CCT) color vision testing is valuable for detecting visual deficits.
  • OCT angiography (OCTA) can identify vascular changes associated with ocular siderosis.
  • Multimodal imaging (OCT, OCTA) and electroretinography (full-field electroretinogram) are effective tools for characterizing retinal changes in ocular siderosis.
