    Summary

Chronic mastitis in she camels can result from teat canal obstruction by keratin, leading to milk retention and bacterial infection. Surgical amputation of affected udder halves offers a successful treatment for this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Animal Pathology
    • Camelid Health

    Background:

    • Chronic mastitis is a significant concern in camelids.
    • Teat canal obstruction can lead to complex mammary gland pathologies.

    Observation:

    • Three cases of unilateral chronic mastitis in she camels were analyzed.
    • Obstruction of the teat canal by keratin was identified as the primary cause.
    • Mammary ducts showed dilatation and milk retention, with secondary bacterial infections present in some cases.

    Findings:

    • Histopathology revealed teat canals and dilated ducts lined by stratified squamous epithelium.
    • Excessive periductal fibrosis was a consistent finding.
    • Bacterial cultures isolated Pasteurella hemolytica and Staphylococcus aureus from two cases; the third was sterile.

    Implications:

    • Keratin impaction in teat canals is a key etiological factor for chronic mastitis in she camels.
    • Understanding the histopathological changes aids in diagnosis and management.
    • Surgical intervention, specifically amputation of affected udder halves, proved effective in resolving the condition.
