Dandy-Walker malformation, a brain abnormality, can be linked to intermittent explosive disorder. This case report shows successful treatment of violent behavior in a patient with Dandy-Walker malformation.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Genetics
Background:
- Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a congenital brain defect.
- It is associated with various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
- Behavioral symptoms like psychosis and aggression are sometimes observed in DWM patients.
Observation:
- A case report of an 18-year-old male with Dandy-Walker malformation is presented.
- The patient exhibited anger outbursts, irritable mood, and violent behavior, consistent with intermittent explosive disorder.
- MRI confirmed typical Dandy-Walker malformation alterations, alongside mild intellectual disabilities and epilepsy.
Findings:
- The patient received a combination treatment of sodium valproate and risperidone.
- Significant reduction in violent behavior was observed during follow-ups at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.
- This suggests a potential therapeutic response for DWM-associated behavioral disturbances.
Implications:
- The findings suggest a possible link between Dandy-Walker malformation and intermittent explosive disorder.
- Understanding this association may aid in recognizing DWM as a potential cause of psychiatric comorbidities.
- Further research into the neurobiological underpinnings connecting DWM and behavioral disorders is warranted.
