Summary

This study found no link between radiographic measurements and patient satisfaction after bunion surgery. Patient outcomes for hallux valgus surgery may depend more on factors beyond X-ray results.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Podiatric Medicine
  • Patient Outcomes Research

Background:

  • Bunion surgery (hallux valgus surgery) is a common elective procedure in the USA.
  • A significant percentage of patients report dissatisfaction post-surgery.
  • Identifying predictors of patient satisfaction is crucial for improving surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between preoperative and postoperative radiographic variables and patient satisfaction one year after hallux valgus surgery.
  • To determine if objective measurements correlate with subjective patient-reported outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from 69 adult patients undergoing isolated hallux valgus surgery.
  • Patients completed a 4-item satisfaction survey assessing pain, overall result, cosmetics, and shoe wear.
  • Conventional radiographic indices were measured preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively.
  • Backward stepwise logistic regression was used to identify significant predictors of satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • 53.6% of patients reported full satisfaction across all surveyed aspects at 12 months postoperatively.
  • The final regression model revealed no statistically significant association between any radiographic or demographic variables and patient satisfaction.
  • Key satisfaction domains including shoe gear, cosmetic appearance, pain relief, and overall operative result were not linked to radiographic findings.

Conclusions:

  • Radiographic variables do not appear to be reliable predictors of patient satisfaction one year after hallux valgus surgery in this cohort.
  • Factors beyond objective radiographic measures, such as quality of life, psychological state, and preoperative expectations, may play a more significant role in patient satisfaction.
  • Further research is recommended to explore these non-radiographic factors influencing patient satisfaction after bunion surgery.
