Background:

  • Dentigerous cysts commonly occur with unerupted teeth.
  • Histopathologic changes in unerupted teeth without radiographic cyst evidence are poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of disease and histopathologic changes in unerupted teeth in dogs, particularly those lacking radiographic evidence of cysts.
  • To determine the prevalence of cystic changes in unerupted mandibular first premolar teeth.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 68 unerupted teeth from 42 dogs presented to a dental referral practice.
  • Radiographic evaluation for cyst evidence followed by surgical resection and histopathologic examination of unerupted teeth and associated tissues.

Main Results:

  • Of 63 unerupted mandibular first premolar teeth, 28 (44.4%) showed radiographic evidence of cysts, with 75% confirmed histopathologically.
  • Of 35 unerupted mandibular first premolar teeth without radiographic cyst evidence, 22.9% exhibited histopathologic evidence of cystic lining epithelium.

Conclusions:

  • A significant percentage of unerupted teeth in dogs, especially mandibular first premolars, can have associated cystic changes not apparent on radiographs.
  • Histopathologic evaluation is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of unerupted teeth, even in the absence of radiographic cyst indicators.
