Summary

Male breast cancer reconstruction after mastectomy is feasible and improves patient satisfaction. Limited studies show autologous flaps are most common, with low complication rates and excellent aesthetic outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and evaluate the outcomes of postmastectomy reconstruction in male breast cancer patients.

  • A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted.
  • Searches were performed across major databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science) using relevant keywords.
  • No limitations were imposed on publication year, country, or study size; primary outcomes included complications, recurrence, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • Eleven articles involving 29 male patients undergoing postmastectomy reconstruction were analyzed, predominantly case reports.
  • Autologous chest wall reconstruction with local flaps was the predominant method (89.7%).
  • Low postoperative complication rates (6.8%) and high patient satisfaction with aesthetic results were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Despite limited research, postmastectomy reconstruction in males with breast cancer appears to restore body image effectively.
  • Reconstruction should be a regular consideration and discussion point for male patients.
  • Larger studies are needed to further elucidate outcomes in this population.
