Plasma levels of folates, ascorbate, vitamin B6 and riboflavin in children
Insights
This study measured plasma vitamin levels in 125 children (ages 4-16) at a psychiatric center. Results showed no significant variations based on age or race, indicating levels comparable to adults.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Nutrition
- Clinical Biochemistry
- Child Psychiatry
Background:
- Nutritional deficiencies can impact child development and mental health.
- Understanding vitamin levels in pediatric populations is crucial for assessing health status.
- Psychiatric conditions in children may be influenced by or influence nutritional status.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine plasma vitamin levels in children admitted to a psychiatric center.
- To investigate potential correlations between vitamin levels, age, and racial origin.
- To compare pediatric vitamin levels with established adult reference ranges.
Main Methods:
- Controlled study involving approximately 125 children aged 4-16 years.
- Analysis of plasma vitamin levels, considering medication and dietary factors.
- Statistical evaluation of mean vitamin values across different age groups and racial origins.
Main Results:
- No significant variations in mean plasma vitamin levels were observed with respect to age.
- Racial origin did not show a significant impact on the measured vitamin levels.
- The determined vitamin levels in children were found to be comparable to those reported for adult populations.
Conclusions:
- Plasma vitamin levels in children admitted to this psychiatric center are generally consistent across age and racial groups.
- The findings suggest that vitamin status in this pediatric cohort is similar to that of adults.
- Further research may explore specific vitamin interventions in pediatric psychiatric care.
Abstract:
Plasma vitamin levels of approximately 125 children admitted to the Queens Child Psychiatric Center were determined in a controlled study, with respect to medication and dietary conditions. The age of these children varied from 4 to 16 years. The data present the mean values with respect to the age and racial origin. There are no significant variations in the mean levels of these vitamins in terms of the age etc. of the subjects. As such the data indicate the levels in children and are comparable to the data for adults.
