Schemas

A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Background:

Schema therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach integrating elements from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and attachment theories.
School avoidance is a complex issue often linked to underlying emotional and psychological difficulties, including depression.

Observation:

A 16-year-old adolescent experiencing significant depression and chronic school avoidance was admitted for inpatient treatment.
The patient underwent a course of inpatient Schema Therapy tailored to address their specific schema modes and emotional dysregulation.

Findings:

Pre- and post-treatment scores on standardized Schema inventories and Depression questionnaires indicated significant improvement.
The patient demonstrated a reduction in depressive symptoms and a decrease in school avoidance behaviors following the intervention.

Implications:

Inpatient Schema Therapy presents a viable treatment option for adolescents with comorbid depression and school avoidance.
Further research is warranted to explore the broader applicability and long-term efficacy of Schema Therapy in this population.
