Summary

Minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction effectively improved postsurgical scars. Early treatment (6-7 weeks) yielded better aesthetic outcomes than later treatment (13-16 weeks) with no adverse effects.

Background:

  • Postsurgical scars are a common complication of surgical procedures.
  • Microneedling, or minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction, shows promise for acne scars but lacks evidence for postsurgical scars during active healing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction for treating acute postsurgical scars.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five patients received three minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction treatments post-surgery.
  • Scar severity was assessed using the Vancouver Scar Scale, Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale, and Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in all scar assessment scales (p < 0.001) at 16 weeks.
  • Early treatment initiation (6-7 weeks) showed a statistically significant improvement in the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale compared to late initiation (13-16 weeks) (p < 0.04).

Conclusions:

  • Minimally invasive percutaneous collagen induction is safe for postsurgical scars in the maturation phase.
  • Initiating treatment earlier in the scar maturation phase enhances aesthetic outcomes.
