Background:

  • Static transcranial magnetic stimulation (tSMS) is increasingly studied for its effects on cortical excitability.
  • While the motor cortex is well-researched, data on tSMS effects on the auditory cortex remain limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of static magnetic stimulation on the primary auditory cortex.
  • To assess changes in auditory responses following tSMS application.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve healthy subjects participated in two sessions.
  • Static magnetic or sham stimulation was applied to the left primary auditory cortex for 30 minutes.
  • Auditory responses were measured immediately before and 20 minutes after stimulation.

Main Results:

  • No significant effects of static magnetic stimulation were found on auditory responses, including onset/offset potentials and oscillatory responses.
  • A reduction in cortical onset and offset potential amplitude was observed after both magnetic and sham stimulation sessions.
  • Unilateral static magnetic stimulation did not alter cortical auditory responses.

Conclusions:

  • Static magnetic stimulation applied to the primary auditory cortex does not appear to affect auditory responses.
  • The feasibility and tolerability of the stimulation protocol were confirmed.
  • Further research with modified stimulation protocols is recommended.
