    Background:

    • Health issues in agricultural workers exposed to aflatoxin-contaminated grains are a known concern.
    • Inhaled airborne particulates during grain processing are suspected to cause carcinomas in factory workers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the presence and levels of airborne aflatoxin in Georgia corn processing facilities.
    • To characterize airborne particulates and their potential health implications for workers.

    Main Methods:

    • Air sampling using Andersen 6-stage, high-volume, and slit samplers in two Georgia corn processing plants.
    • Analysis of settled dust and bulk corn samples for aflatoxin contamination.
    • Particle size and shape analysis of airborne particulates.

    Main Results:

    • No airborne aflatoxin was detected in the surveyed facilities.
    • Aflatoxin was present in 10% of settled dust samples.
    • 30% of bulk corn samples contained low levels of aflatoxin (0.15 to 8 ppb).
    • Airborne particles averaged 2-3 microns in diameter and were globular.

    Conclusions:

    • While airborne aflatoxin was not found, contaminated settled dust poses a potential exposure risk.
    • Further investigation into the health effects of inhaled contaminated dust on agricultural workers is warranted.
