Thoracic and lumbar spine trauma classification systems fail to predict post-traumatic kyphotic deformity

Post-traumatic kyphosis in the thoracic and lumbar spine can occur even with intact posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) injuries. Current classification systems and MRI assessments of PLC integrity do not reliably predict kyphotic deformity development after spinal trauma.

- High interobserver variability was noted in assessing ligamentous injury severity on MRI.

- Current classification systems for thoracic and lumbar spine injuries are insufficient to predict the risk of post-traumatic kyphosis.
- Integrity of the posterior ligamentous complex (PLC), as assessed by MRI, does not reliably predict the development of post-traumatic kyphotic deformity.
