A rare cecal duplication cyst was diagnosed in a young adult male presenting with acute abdominal pain. Surgical resection confirmed the non-communicating cyst, highlighting its importance in differential diagnoses.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Cecal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies, with limited case reports in adult populations.
- Congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract can present atypically in adulthood.
Observation:
- A 23-year-old male presented with symptoms of fever, constipation, and right lower quadrant pain.
- Imaging revealed an 8.8x7.5x6 cm cystic mass adjacent to the cecum.
Findings:
- Surgical exploration and subsequent histopathology confirmed a non-communicating cecal duplication cyst.
- The patient underwent a right hemicolectomy for cyst resection.
Implications:
- Cecal duplication cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal conditions.
- Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for favorable patient outcomes.
