    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Health Services Research

    Background:

    • Chronic mental illness presents significant challenges for individuals and healthcare systems.
    • Reducing hospital readmissions and improving quality of life are key goals in mental healthcare.
    • The effectiveness of case management interventions requires rigorous evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effectiveness of case management versus usual care for chronic mentally ill individuals.
    • To assess the impact on mental hospital readmissions and quality of life.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized pretest-posttest control group design was employed.
    • 417 individuals with at least two prior mental hospital discharges were assigned to case management (N=213) or control (N=204) groups.
    • Data were collected after a 12-month intervention period.

    Main Results:

    • The case management group received more services and incurred higher costs.
    • No significant reduction in mental hospital readmissions was observed in the case management group.
    • Improvements in quality of life indicators were not evident for the case management group.

    Conclusions:

    • Case management, as implemented, did not demonstrate superiority over usual care in reducing readmissions or enhancing quality of life for this population.
    • Further research is needed to explore alternative models or factors influencing case management effectiveness.
