Subcapsular renal hematoma is a rare complication following ureterorenoscopy. This case highlights the importance of considering this diagnosis in patients with persistent pain and fever post-procedure.

Technical Modification of the Terminal Ureter During Total Transperitoneal Laparoscopic Nephroureterectomy for Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma

Background:

Ureterorenoscopy with holmium laser is a common procedure for kidney stones.
Subcapsular renal hematoma is a rare but serious complication.

Observation:

A 56-year-old male on antiplatelet therapy underwent ureterorenoscopy for a large kidney stone.
Post-operatively, the patient developed fever, back pain, and hydronephrosis due to residual stones and stent obstruction.
Computed tomography revealed a subcapsular renal hematoma with infection.

Findings:

The patient required percutaneous hematoma drainage and nephrostomy.
This case illustrates a rare instance of subcapsular renal hematoma following ureterorenoscopy.

Implications:

Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for subcapsular renal hematoma in patients presenting with post-ureterorenoscopy complications.
Prompt diagnosis and management are crucial for favorable outcomes.
