Background:

Female genital cutting/mutilation (FGC/M) is a harmful practice with limited educational strategies for healthcare professionals.
Nursing students require effective methods to understand and address FGC/M.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a virtual dramatization simulation for teaching FGC/M to nursing students.
To assess the effectiveness and student engagement with a novel educational approach.

Main Methods:

A virtual simulation using a standardized patient (SP) portraying an East African immigrant woman was implemented.
35 undergraduate nursing students from two Midwest US nursing schools participated.

Main Results:

Participants found the simulation effective for teaching and learning about FGC/M.
Students reported the simulation as novel and engaging for a sensitive subject.

Conclusions:

Virtual simulation with a standardized patient is an effective and comfortable educational strategy for teaching FGC/M.
Debriefing is a crucial component of this simulation.
