Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.2K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

228
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.3K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Acute Coronary Syndrome III: Diagnostic Studies

21
Diagnosing acute coronary syndrome or ACS begins with a thorough patient history. Notable symptoms include central, crushing chest pain radiating to the left arm, neck, jaw, or back, along with shortness of breath, sweating (diaphoresis), nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and palpitations. It is crucial to note any history of cardiac illnesses and assess risk factors, including age, gender, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and a sedentary lifestyle.During physical examination, vital...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.8K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Study Designs in Epidemiology01:20

Study Designs in Epidemiology

397
Epidemiological study designs are fundamental tools for investigating the distribution, determinants, and control of health conditions in populations. They help researchers understand the relationships between exposures and outcomes, and they broadly fall into two categories: "observational" and "experimental" studies.
Observational studies are those where the researcher does not intervene but rather observes natural variations. They include cross-sectional, cohort, and...

Summary

The Spanish full-length Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) shows good reliability and validity in Puerto Rican youth. This supports its use for assessing depression in Spanish-speaking adolescents.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Assessment

Background:

  • The Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) is a validated tool for U.S. children.
  • Psychometric data for the Spanish full-length (28-item) CDI-2 is limited.
  • Spanish-speaking youth require culturally relevant and validated assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the internal consistency and concurrent validity of the Spanish-language CDI-2.
  • To assess the psychometric properties of the Spanish CDI-2 in Puerto Rican adolescents.
  • To compare findings with existing data on Spanish and English versions of the CDI-2.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 51 Puerto Rican youth (ages 12-18) was recruited from diverse settings.
  • Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha coefficients.
  • Concurrent validity was assessed by correlating CDI-2 scores with the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale-2 (RADS-2).

Main Results:

  • High alpha coefficients were found for the CDI-2 Total score (.84) and subscales (.74, .76).
  • Reliability coefficients for subscales ranged from .58 to .65.
  • Strong correlations were observed between the Spanish CDI-2 and RADS-2 scores (r = .87; subscales .66–.70).

Conclusions:

  • The Spanish full-length CDI-2 demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties in Puerto Rican adolescents.
  • Findings suggest the Spanish CDI-2 is a reliable and valid measure for this population.
  • This study supports the use of the Spanish CDI-2 for depression assessment in Hispanic youth.
