Effective interventions for sexual dysfunction in multiple sclerosis (MS) include psychoeducational and medical approaches. Psychoeducational methods show promise for women, while medical treatments benefit men with MS-related sexual challenges.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Sexual Health
- Rehabilitation Medicine
Background:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently causes sexual dysfunction.
- Current treatments for MS-related sexual dysfunction are limited and often unreliable.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and evaluate effective interventions for sexual function and dysfunction in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
- To synthesize evidence from published interventional studies.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, etc.) from 1990 to 2021.
- Interventional studies with English or Persian abstracts were included.
- Results were analyzed using RevMan 5.3 software, with p < 0.05 considered significant.
Main Results:
- 41 studies were included, categorized into sexual function (n=27) and sexual dysfunction (n=14).
- Psychoeducational interventions significantly improved sexual function (p=0.0003).
- Most interventions (13/14) for sexual dysfunction showed improvement; medical interventions were effective for men, and psychoeducational for women.
Conclusions:
- Psychoeducational and medical interventions are the most common effective strategies for sexual dysfunction in multiple sclerosis.
- Psychoeducational interventions demonstrated positive effects specifically in women.
- Medical interventions showed positive effects when targeted at men.
