Is the maximal lactate steady state concept really relevant to predict endurance performance?

Maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) power output and VO2max fraction at MLSS do not predict endurance performance. These key metrics did not improve predictions of time trial power output beyond VO2max and gross efficiency.

- The findings challenge the notion that PO_MLSS and %VO2_MLSS are independent predictors of time trial performance.
- These metrics do not appear to be critical for predicting performance in supra-MLSS events.
- Endurance performance prediction may rely more on VO2max and gross efficiency than MLSS-derived parameters.
