We computationally studied ternary fluid mixtures, revealing four phase separation mechanisms. A key finding is the crucial role of minor component enrichment at the fluid-fluid interface in ternary systems.
Area of Science:
- Computational fluid dynamics
- Soft matter physics
- Chemical engineering
Background:
- Understanding spontaneous phase separation in multicomponent fluid mixtures is crucial for various industrial processes.
- Previous theoretical models based on linear stability analysis often fail to fully explain observed phase separation behaviors in ternary systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- To computationally investigate the spontaneous phase separation of ternary fluid mixtures.
- To develop a phenomenological model that accurately describes the phase separation mechanisms and their prevalence.
- To identify the dominant mechanisms driving phase separation in ternary systems.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing the lattice Boltzmann method for computational simulations.
- Analyzing phase separation in ternary fluid mixtures with both equal and unequal surface tensions.
- Developing and validating a phenomenological model against simulation results.
Main Results:
- Identified four basic mechanisms governing ternary fluid phase separation pathways.
- Demonstrated that linear stability analysis is insufficient to explain observed simulation results.
- Developed a phenomenological model that successfully captures composition regimes for each mechanism.
- Highlighted the significant role of minor component enrichment and instability at the fluid-fluid interface.
Conclusions:
- The study provides a novel classification and predictive model for ternary fluid phase separation.
- The findings emphasize the unique interfacial phenomena in ternary mixtures compared to binary ones.
- The developed model offers a more accurate approach to understanding and predicting phase behavior in complex fluid systems.
