Area of Science:

  • Botany
  • Conservation Genetics
  • Ethnobotany

Background:

  • The global ginseng market is substantial, but many species, including Vietnamese ginseng (Panax vietnamensis), are threatened.
  • Sustainable development is essential for conserving ginseng biodiversity and meeting market demand.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of wild and cultivated Panax vietnamensis.
  • To inform conservation strategies and sustainable development initiatives for Vietnamese ginseng.

Main Methods:

  • Nuclear markers (Angiosperm-353 probe set) were used to capture genetic data.
  • Genetic diversity and population structure were analyzed for 319 individuals using 1,181 SNPs.
  • Population statistics and STRUCTURE analysis were employed.

Main Results:

  • High genetic diversity and significant gene flow were observed across wild and cultivated populations.
  • Low genetic differentiation was found between wild and cultivated groups.
  • Both wild and cultivated samples exhibited high admixture from two ancestral populations.

Conclusions:

  • Ancient and ongoing cultivation and trade practices facilitate high gene flow in Panax vietnamensis.
  • Conservation efforts must involve indigenous peoples and local communities, valuing their knowledge for sustainable development.
