Summary

The Prionics ForensiX SafeDry swab demonstrated superior performance in detecting seminal fluid components and DNA compared to other forensic swab types. This finding supports its use for improved evidence collection in sexual assault cases.

Background:

  • Accurate collection of biological evidence is crucial in sexual assault investigations.
  • Existing forensic swab kits vary in their efficiency for DNA and seminal fluid detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of the Prionics ForensiX Evidence Collection Kit with alternative swabs (Prionics ForensiX SafeDry and Sarstedt Forensic Swab XL).
  • To determine the optimal swab for collecting intravaginal samples for DNA and seminal fluid analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Volunteers provided intravaginal swabs using three different collection kits after unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • Quantification of DNA, detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA), and spermatozoa were assessed for each swab type.
  • Autosomal Short Tandem Repeat (STR) profiling was performed on sperm cell fractions.

Main Results:

  • The Sarstedt XL swab yielded higher DNA quantities from sperm cell fractions compared to the ForensiX Kit.
  • The Prionics ForensiX SafeDry showed more concise and favorable results for prostate specific antigen (PSA) detection.
  • Complete autosomal STR profiles were consistently obtained from sperm cell fractions across all tested swabs and time points.

Conclusions:

  • The Prionics ForensiX SafeDry offers improved sampling and processing properties for forensic evidence collection.
  • Adoption of the ForensiX SafeDry is recommended to enhance victim care and investigative outcomes in sexual assault cases.
