Kidney transplantation (KT) significantly improves erectile function (EF) in male patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Younger patients with mild ED experienced the most substantial improvements, suggesting KT enhances sexual health.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Urology
- Sexual Medicine
Background:
- End-stage renal disease (ESRD) frequently causes erectile dysfunction (ED), impacting quality of life.
- Kidney transplantation (KT) is a treatment for ESRD, but its effect on sexual function requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of successful kidney transplantation (KT) on erectile function (EF) in male patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Main Methods:
- A prospective, single-center study assessed 68 male ESRD patients before and one year after KT.
- The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15) questionnaire was used to evaluate erectile function.
- Patients were analyzed in two age groups: <50 years and ≥50 years.
Main Results:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) prevalence decreased from 92.6% before KT to significantly lower rates post-transplantation (22.6% in younger, 86.5% in older patients).
- Mean IIEF-15 scores improved significantly from 46.8 to 55.5 (P <.001) after KT.
- Sexual desire, orgasm, and overall satisfaction improved; younger patients with mild ED showed the most significant improvement.
Conclusions:
- Kidney transplantation (KT) positively impacts sexual function and significantly improves erectile dysfunction (ED) in male ESRD patients.
- The duration of dialysis did not affect ED improvement post-transplantation.
- Improved sexual function following KT may encourage more ESRD patients to consider transplantation.
