Summary

Falls pose a significant public health challenge, contributing to morbidity and mortality in the elderly.
Evaluating fall risk and implementing preventive interventions can be complex.

Purpose of the Study:

To consolidate key information on falls in the elderly.
To provide a critical review and practical clinical guidance for fall prevention.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature search of the PubMed database in March 2022.
Keywords included 'fall elderly', 'fall prevention', and 'fall risk'.
Focused on reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and practice guidelines published within the last five years.

Main Results:

Identified multiple risk factors for falls across psychosocial, demographic, medical, medication, behavioral, and environmental domains.
Clinical evaluation should include risk factor assessment and validated tools like gait velocity, Timed Up and Go, and Berg Balance Test.
Physical activity is a primary fall prevention strategy, with technology also playing a role in detection and prevention.

Conclusions:

A structured approach to assessing older adults at risk of falls is achievable.
