Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Virology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has led to millions of deaths globally.
  • Emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 present ongoing challenges due to increased infectivity and potential virulence.
  • A significant clinical challenge is identifying the point at which an infected individual is no longer contagious.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current scientific data on SARS-CoV-2 infectivity and transmission.
  • To integrate clinical experience from Iceland's pandemic response.
  • To propose evidence-based guidelines for determining non-infectious status in COVID-19 patients.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent publications on SARS-CoV-2 infectivity and transmission.
  • Synthesis of clinical observations from Icelandic physicians during the pandemic.
  • Development of proposed guidelines based on combined scientific data and clinical expertise.

Main Results:

  • The review addresses key questions regarding SARS-CoV-2 contagiousness.
  • It explores aspects of immunity against SARS-CoV-2.
  • Guidelines are suggested for assessing patient non-infectious status.

Conclusions:

  • Accurate determination of non-infectious states in COVID-19 patients is crucial for transmission control.
  • Combining scientific evidence with practical clinical experience provides a robust approach to guideline development.
  • The proposed guidelines aim to aid healthcare professionals in managing infectiousness and immunity concerns related to SARS-CoV-2.
