Direct pulp capping materials like Dycal, TheraCal LC, Biodentin, Vitrebond Plus, and Fuji IX GP can increase intra-pulpal temperature. Minimizing light-curing steps is crucial to prevent excessive heat buildup during these dental procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Direct pulp capping aims to preserve pulp vitality.
  • Assessing intra-pulpal temperature rise during procedures is critical for pulp protection.
  • Light-cured materials and procedures can significantly impact pulp temperature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate intra-pulpal temperature variations during various direct pulp capping methods.
  • To compare the thermal effects of different liners and bases under light-curing.
  • To determine the influence of multiple light-curing steps on pulp temperature.

Main Methods:

  • Extracted third molars underwent Class I preparations with controlled pulp exposure.
  • Teeth were placed in a simulated oral environment with standardized temperature (36°C).

  • Infrared thermography recorded intra-pulpal temperature changes during light-curing of liners (Dycal, TheraCal LC, Biodentin, Vitrebond Plus, Fuji IX GP) and bulk fill composite restoration.
  • Main Results:

    • All tested liners and bases, when light-cured, caused intra-pulpal temperature increases exceeding 10°C-20°C.
    • No tested material provided significant thermal insulation when used as a second layer after additional light-curing.
    • Increased numbers of light-activation steps prolonged the duration of elevated intra-pulpal temperatures.

    Conclusions:

    • Reducing the number of light-activation steps in direct pulp capping is recommended.
    • Minimizing light-curing duration helps keep intra-pulpal temperature below critical thresholds.
    • Careful material selection and procedural planning are essential for pulp protection during direct pulp capping.
