Background:

  • Periodontal pathology can lead to intrapulpal calcifications.
  • The reverse relationship, whether periodontitis causes intrapulpal calcifications, is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontitis and intrapulpal calcifications.
  • To identify factors contributing to the occurrence of intrapulpal calcifications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective radiological study of 332 teeth from 79 patients with periodontitis.
  • Comparison of teeth with attachment loss to contralateral teeth without attachment loss.
  • Statistical analysis using Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests.

Main Results:

  • 75.6% of teeth had attachment loss; 30.7% had intrapulpal calcification.
  • Teeth with intact crowns showed significantly fewer calcifications compared to those with restorations or caries (p < 0.005).
  • No statistically significant association was found between attachment loss and coronary or root canal calcifications.

Conclusions:

  • This radiographic study found no association between periodontitis and intrapulpal calcifications.
  • Intrapulpal calcifications in teeth with attachment loss are not necessarily a consequence of periodontal disease.
