A new German version of the Sensory Perception Questionnaire (SPQ) effectively identifies sensory hypersensitivity in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This validated tool aids in diagnosing ASD-related sensory processing differences.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Clinical Psychology

Context:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized for sensory abnormalities, yet validated assessment tools are scarce in German-speaking regions.
  • The Sensory Perception Questionnaire (SPQ) by Tavassoli et al. (2014) is a self-rating scale for adults focusing on perceptual aspects.

Purpose:

  • To translate and validate the SPQ into German for assessing sensory abnormalities in adults with ASD.
  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the translated SPQ and identify items that effectively differentiate between individuals with and without ASD.

Summary:

  • A German version of the SPQ was developed and validated with 85 adults with ASD and 103 neurotypical controls.
  • A subset of 33 items demonstrated significant group separation, primarily related to auditory, visual, and tactile hypersensitivity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Hypersensitivity correlated with higher Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) scores and age, but not with Empathy Quotient (EQ) or IQ.
  • Impact:

    • The validated German SPQ short version shows improved group separation and comparable concurrent validity, making it suitable for screening and clinical diagnosis of sensory hypersensitivity in ASD.
    • This tool addresses a critical gap in diagnostic resources for sensory processing differences in German-speaking populations.
