Novel silver clusters were synthesized using anion templates like V10O28(6-) and SO4(2-), with varying carboxylate ligands controlling their structure and properties.
Area of Science:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Anion templates play a crucial role in directing the assembly of novel inorganic clusters.
- Carboxylate ligands offer versatility in modifying the structure and properties of metal-based clusters.
- Exploring new synthetic routes for complex silver thiolated clusters is an active area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel anion-templated silver thiolated clusters using different carboxylate ligands.
- To investigate the influence of anion templates (V10O28(6-) and SO4(2-)) and carboxylate ligands on cluster assembly.
- To explore the structural diversity and electrochemical properties of the synthesized silver clusters.
Main Methods:
- Solvothermal synthesis conditions were employed to generate anion templates in situ.
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the crystal structures of the synthesized clusters.
- Electrochemical properties of the resulting silver clusters were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Three novel anion-templated silver thiolated clusters were successfully synthesized: V10O28@Ag46(iPrS)28(CF3CO2)12(DMF)2 (1), V10O28@Ag46(iPrS)30(CF3CO2)8(PhCO2)2(DMF)4 (2), and [SO4@Ag20(iPrS)10(PTA)3(HPTA)2] (3).
- Clusters 1 and 2 feature discrete V10O28@Ag46 structures, with cluster 2 exhibiting different organic shells due to the addition of PhCO2H.
- Cluster 3 presents a unique three-dimensional (3D) structure containing the SO4(2-) template, formed with the addition of H2PTA.
Conclusions:
- This study reports the first synthesis of heterogeneous silver clusters incorporating the V10O28(6-) anion template with isopropyl thiolate ligands.
- A novel Ag20 cluster with a 3D structure templated by SO4(2-) was successfully obtained.
- The findings highlight the significant impact of carboxylic acids on the assembly process of silver clusters, suggesting further exploration is warranted.
