Teeth

594
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Rehabilitating distal extension cases presents significant dental challenges due to the impossibility of fabricating fixed prostheses.
  • Available options include implant-supported prostheses, cast partial dentures, and precision attachment prostheses.

Observation:

  • Precision attachments enhance masticatory force distribution, reducing stress on abutments and soft tissues.
  • These attachments improve the esthetics of dental restorations.
  • They also help retain proprioception, leading to increased patient comfort.

Findings:

  • This case report focuses on the successful fabrication of precision attachments for retaining both maxillary and mandibular partial dentures.

Implications:

  • Precision attachments provide a viable and effective method for restoring function and esthetics in challenging distal extension cases.
  • This technique offers improved patient comfort and proprioception compared to traditional removable partial dentures.
  • The findings support the use of precision attachments as a key treatment modality in prosthodontics.
