  • A comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted using data from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to December 31, 2021.
  • Fifteen studies involving 10,285 MS cases and 25,416 controls were analyzed for associations with forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1).
  • Meta-regression identified hypertension (diastolic pressure) and hyperglycemia as key factors influencing heterogeneity in FVC and FEV1 findings.

Key Points:

  • Pooled analysis revealed significantly decreased FVC (SMD -0.247) and FEV1 (SMD -0.205) in individuals with MS compared to controls.
  • No significant difference in the FEV1/FVC ratio was observed between MS patients and the control group.
