Background and Environment Affect Phenotype02:27

Background and Environment Affect Phenotype

6.7K
Although the genetic makeup of an organism plays a major role in determining the phenotype, there are also several environmental factors, such as temperature, oxygen availability, presence of mutagens, that can alter an organism’s phenotype.
An example of how genetic background affects phenotype can be seen in horses. The Extension gene in horses is responsible for their coat color. A wild-type gene (EE) produces black pigment in the coat, while a mutant gene (ee) produces red pigment. A...

Position-effect Variegation

6.5K
In 1928, a German botanist Emil Heitz observed the moss nuclei with a DNA binding dye. He observed that while some chromatin regions decondense and spread out in the interphase nucleus, others do not. He termed them euchromatin and heterochromatin, respectively. He proposed that the heterochromatin regions reflect a functionally inactive state of the genome. It was later confirmed that heterochromatin is transcriptionally repressed, and euchromatin is transcriptionally active chromatin.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Ecology
  • Neurogenetics
  • Evolutionary Biology

Background:

  • Animal personality, or consistent behavioral variation, is crucial for social species' success.
  • Understanding the molecular basis of personality is limited, especially in species with simpler social structures.
  • Research has often focused on highly social animals, neglecting simpler societies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate the proximate mechanisms of personality variation in collective behavior.
  • Examine gene expression differences between behavioral phenotypes in American cockroaches.
  • Explore the role of social context in modulating personality-related gene expression.

Main Methods:

  • Classified individual American cockroaches into 'bold' and 'shy' behavioral phenotypes experimentally.
  • Conducted comparative gene expression analyses between these distinct behavioral groups.
  • Utilized a species with rudimentary social systems to study personality mechanisms.

Main Results:

  • Identified significant differences in gene expression profiles between bold and shy cockroach phenotypes.
  • Gene expression patterns suggest that social context can influence boldness-related characteristics.
  • Provided initial molecular insights into the basis of behavioral variation.

Conclusions:

  • American cockroaches serve as a valuable model for studying the evolution of social behavior and complexity.
  • This research offers a foundational understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying boldness and behavioral plasticity.
  • Highlights the potential for gene expression to explain individual differences in behavior within social groups.
