Group Polarization01:01

Group Polarization

35.1K
Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

Block Diagram Reduction01:22

Block Diagram Reduction

272
The process of deriving the transfer function of a control system often involves reducing its block diagram to a single block. This simplification can be achieved through a series of strategic operations, including relocating branch points and comparators. These operations preserve the overall function of the system while allowing for easier manipulation and combination of blocks.
The first step in this process is the identification and relocation of a branch point. A branch point, where a...

Hückel's Rule Diagram of π MOs: Frost Circle01:08

Hückel's Rule Diagram of π MOs: Frost Circle

4.6K
The Frost circle or the inscribed polygon method is a graphical method for determining the relative energies of π molecular orbitals (MOs) for planar, fully conjugated, and monocyclic compounds. This method was first described by A. A. Frost and Boris Musulin in 1953.
A Frost circle is constructed by drawing a polygon whose number of edges is equal to the number of carbons of the given cyclic system, with one of the vertices pointing down. Then, a circle is drawn enclosing the polygon so...

¹³C NMR: Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer (DEPT)

1.1K
When proton-coupled carbon-13 spectra are simplified by a broadband proton decoupling technique, structural information about the coupled protons is lost. Distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer (DEPT) is a technique that provides information on the number of hydrogens attached to each carbon in a molecule. While the DEPT experiment utilizes complex pulse sequences, the pulse delay and flip angle are specifically manipulated. The resulting signals have different phases depending on...

Conservative Site-specific Recombination and Phase Variation02:53

Conservative Site-specific Recombination and Phase Variation

6.1K
Because the DNA segments are cut and reorganized in a direction-specific manner, site-specific recombination has emerged as an efficient genetic engineering technique. Flippase and Cyclization recombinases or Flp and Cre, respectively, are two members of the tyrosine recombinase family derived from bacteriophages, that are used to mediate site-specific DNA insertions, deletions, and targeted expression of proteins in mammalian cell lines.
The recognition sites for Cre recombinase called LoxP...

Overview of Transposition and Recombination02:13

Overview of Transposition and Recombination

16.0K
Transposons make up a significant part of genomes of various organisms. Therefore, it is believed that transposition played a major evolutionary role in speciation by changing genome sizes and modifying gene expression patterns. For example, in bacteria, transposition can lead to conferring antibiotic resistance. Movement of transposable elements within the genetic pool of pathogenic bacteria can aid in transfer of antibiotic-resistant genetic elements. In eukaryotes, transposons can carry out...

Area of Science:

  • Coding Theory
  • Information Theory
  • Digital Communications

Background:

  • Successive Cancellation (SC) list decoding uses tree pruning, retaining the L best paths.
  • The correct decoding path can be erroneously pruned due to imposed penalties, leading to decoding failure.
  • Shifted pruning (SP) schemes, including SCL-flip decoding, attempt to recover the correct path by shifting the pruning window.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel metric for SC list decoding that enhances performance, particularly for medium and long codes.
  • To introduce nested shifted pruning schemes to improve the average complexity of the decoding process.
  • To address the limitations of standard tree pruning in SC list decoding where the correct path may be discarded.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a new performance metric for path selection in SC list decoding.
  • Introduction and analysis of nested shifted pruning schemes.
  • Evaluation of the proposed metric and schemes, particularly for medium and long code lengths.

Main Results:

  • The proposed new metric demonstrates improved performance for medium and long codes compared to existing metrics.
  • Nested shifted pruning schemes are suggested to optimize average decoding complexity.
  • The study addresses scenarios where the correct path might be among the L worst paths, leading to failure in standard SC list decoding.

Conclusions:

  • The novel metric and nested shifted pruning schemes offer a significant improvement for successive cancellation list decoding.
  • These advancements enhance the reliability and efficiency of error correction codes, especially for longer data sequences.
  • The proposed techniques mitigate the risk of decoding failure caused by aggressive tree pruning.
