Data analysis tasks, especially in intelligence, require collaboration and clear communication of insight development.
Analytic provenance, detailing interactions and steps, shows promise for communicating sensemaking but lacks universal guidelines.
Understanding how to present provenance is crucial for effective collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the impact of different types of provenance information on new analysts' sensemaking processes.
To compare the effects of data coverage and interaction history on analyst confidence, work repetition, data filtering, and investigation strategies.

Main Methods:

A qualitative comparison of analysts' behaviors in a 30-minute textual exploration scenario.
Two types of provenance information were introduced: data coverage (what was interacted with) and interaction history (when it was interacted with).
Analysis focused on changes in analyst confidence, propensity to repeat work, data filtering, information identification, and investigation strategies.

Main Results:

Data coverage provenance provided insights without restricting individual investigation freedom.
Interaction history provenance did not significantly increase work mimicry but increased understanding time.
Interaction history led to less confident conclusions and less relevant information gathering.

Conclusions:

Data coverage is a beneficial form of provenance for enhancing analyst confidence and efficiency.
Interaction history, while potentially useful, requires more time for comprehension and can negatively impact analytical outcomes.
Empirical data on provenance summarization can inform the design of tools to improve collaborative data analysis and intelligence sensemaking.
