    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Supraglottitis presents a significant risk of morbidity and mortality in adults.
    • Previous literature has limited data on supraglottitis in black adult populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the largest series of black adults diagnosed with supraglottitis.
    • To highlight demographic differences and clinical presentation in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 25 adult patients diagnosed with supraglottitis.
    • Analysis of patient demographics, clinical presentation, and diagnostic methods.

    Main Results:

    • Eighteen of 25 patients were black, forming the largest reported series.
    • Black men with supraglottitis were, on average, 14 years younger than previously reported adult cohorts.
    • Odynophagia disproportionate to oropharyngeal findings was a key indicator.

    Conclusions:

    • The index of suspicion for supraglottitis should be elevated in young adults presenting with severe throat pain.
    • Indirect laryngoscopy is vital for diagnosis and timely intervention.
    • Early recognition and treatment are essential to mitigate potential complications of supraglottitis.
