Summary

Elevated platelet count (thrombocytosis) is common in stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and indicates a poorer prognosis. This finding suggests platelet count is a useful prognostic factor for survival in NSCLC patients.

Background:

  • Thrombocytosis, or an increased platelet count, is associated with various cancers, including lung cancer.
  • Elevated platelet counts have been linked to disease stage, histological type, and survival outcomes in cancer patients.
  • Recent findings suggest thrombocytosis may indicate a poor prognosis in malignancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the prevalence of thrombocytosis in stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).
  • To assess the prognostic value of platelet count in patients with stage IV NSCLC.
  • To investigate the relationship between thrombocytosis, clinico-pathologic factors, and median survival in stage IV NSCLC.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study conducted from September 2019 to August 2020.
  • 108 patients with stage IV NSCLC were enrolled, with data collected via history, physical examination, investigations, and semi-structured questionnaires.
  • Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 21.0, including univariate and multivariate analyses.

Main Results:

  • 30.6% of patients presented with thrombocytosis.
  • Performance status and weight loss were statistically significant between normal and elevated platelet count groups.
  • Univariate and multivariate analyses identified age, performance status, and initial thrombocytosis as independent prognostic determinants for overall survival.
  • Median survival was significantly shorter for patients with elevated platelet counts (5.5 months) compared to those with normal counts (7.5 months).

Conclusions:

  • Thrombocytosis is a frequent finding in stage IV NSCLC at presentation.
  • Elevated platelet count is a significant independent prognostic factor for reduced overall survival in stage IV NSCLC.
  • Platelet count serves as a valuable prognostic indicator for survival in patients diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC.
