The relationship between executive functioning and addictive behavior: new insights from a longitudinal community

Lower general executive functioning (GEF) predicts increased substance use quantity and frequency over time, suggesting a role in the progression of addictive behaviors. This challenges direct vulnerability models for addictive disorders.

- Addictive disorders might develop secondary to prolonged periods of risky use, rather than solely from a direct vulnerability.
- Existing etiological models of addiction need refinement to incorporate the evolving role of executive functioning.
