Patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) show varying digital health activity. Higher eHealth literacy is linked to greater use of online health information and apps for self-management.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Digital Health
- Health Literacy
Background:
- Electronic health (eHealth) offers potential for secondary prevention self-management post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
- Patient engagement with digital health tools and their eHealth literacy levels remain underexplored in this population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the digital health activity of patients post-PCI at baseline, 2, and 6 months.
- To investigate the association between eHealth literacy and health-related digital activity in PCI patients.
Main Methods:
- A multicentre cohort study involving 1970 patients from three Norwegian PCI centres.
- Data collection via medical records, national registries, and patient self-reports, including the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS).
Main Results:
- 67% of patients used the internet for health information at baseline, with a mean eHEALS score indicating lower eHealth literacy.
- Significant associations were found between eHealth literacy and internet health information seeking (coefficient 10.90).
- Baseline eHealth literacy positively correlated with using the internet for health information (OR 1.19) and health apps (OR 1.15) at 2 months.
Conclusions:
- Patient eHealth literacy is a key determinant of their engagement with eHealth technologies for health information post-PCI.
- Findings highlight the importance of assessing and potentially improving eHealth literacy to optimize digital health tool utilization for secondary prevention.
