Photoelectrochemical oxidation effectively removed over 99% of nitrates and phosphates from coffee wastewater. This advanced oxidation process offers a sustainable solution for treating industrial water pollutants.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Chemistry
- Water Treatment Technologies
- Applied Electrochemistry
Background:
- Water quality is essential for public health and various applications globally.
- Coffee processing wastewater contains significant nitrate and phosphate pollutants.
- Conventional treatment methods may not be sufficient for complete pollutant removal.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of photoelectrochemical oxidation (PECO) for removing nitrate and phosphate from coffee processing wastewater.
- To optimize PECO parameters including UV/H2O2, pH, current, and electrolytes.
- To evaluate the role of calcium chloride as an electrolyte in pollutant removal.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a hybrid photoelectrochemical oxidation (PECO) system.
- Investigated the effects of UV/H2O2, pH, electrolysis time, and current.
- Employed response surface methodology and Microsoft Excel for data analysis.
- Performed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine parameter significance.
Main Results:
- Achieved 99.823% nitrate and 99.982% phosphate removal.
- Optimal conditions identified: pH 7, 0.40 amperes current, 1.5g calcium chloride, and 40 minutes electrolysis time.
- Calcium chloride demonstrated high effectiveness in removing organic compounds.
Conclusions:
- Hybrid PECO with UV/H2O2 is a highly efficient method for treating coffee wastewater.
- Optimized PECO parameters significantly enhance nitrate and phosphate removal rates.
- Calcium chloride is a promising electrolyte for improving organic compound removal in PECO processes.
