Background:

  • Horizontal violence (HV) is defined as persistent interpersonal aggression and mistreatment among colleagues.
  • Understanding the sources of HV is crucial for improving the learning environment in medical training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify sources of horizontal violence experienced by emergency medicine (EM) residents.
  • To categorize the types of horizontal violence encountered by EM residents.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed.
  • Data were collected from EM residents using the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R).
  • Participants reported interactions with residents and support staff over six months.

Main Results:

  • A response rate of 89% (23/26 residents) was achieved.
  • Women reported a higher frequency of HV compared to men (P = .01).
  • Women reported higher incidence of work-related HV from residents and staff (P = .05 and P = .02, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Horizontal violence is present among EM residents.
  • Women EM residents experience HV more frequently than their male counterparts.
