Summary

This study investigated how emotion affects auditory distraction in memory tasks. Results show that while negative emotions improve memory recall, they do not alter auditory distraction.

  • Experiment 1 examined auditory-deviant and changing-state effects with high-arousal negative vs. neutral targets.
  • Experiment 2 assessed the impact of reversed speech and steady-state sequences on memory for emotional vs. neutral targets.

  • Participants better remembered the serial order of high-arousal negative targets compared to neutral targets.
  • Auditory distraction was not significantly modulated by the emotional arousal of the targets.
  • Emotional facilitation of serial-order reconstruction was observed, but not a modulation of distraction.

  • Auditory distraction appears to be a stimulus-driven, automatic process.
  • Emotional-motivational factors do not influence the degree of auditory distraction.
  • The automatic-capture account is supported, suggesting distraction is independent of emotional modulation.
