Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and identify significant risk factors associated with the development of keratoconus.
  • To evaluate the correlation between lifestyle and environmental factors and keratoconus prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • A monocentric, cross-sectional case-control study was conducted involving 195 keratoconus patients and 195 matched controls.
  • Data were collected using self-completed questionnaires.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to determine significant associations.

Main Results:

  • Significant risk factors for keratoconus included family history (OR=22.2), eye rubbing (OR=10.9), allergies (OR=3.80), smoking exposure (OR=2.08), and dry eyes (OR=1.77).
  • Increased eye rubbing and pressure from sleeping position were associated with the severity of keratoconus in the affected eye.

Conclusions:
